Dear traveller,
I hope you are doing well and starting to think about your trip to Papua.
To help you prepare, I'd like to give you some more detailed info on how to obtain your visa(s).
Travellers from almost 90 countries can enter the country with a tourist "visa on arrival": no need to go to a consulate.
If you are a citizen of any of those countries (see the list here) you have two options to obtain this visa:
1. "E-visa".
You can apply online for the Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA), also called the B1 visa. Appendix 1 of the information package explains how to complete the process. It takes a few minutes and you get your visa instantaneously.
Key things to know:
- The B1/ VoA visa allows you to stay up to 30 days in Indonesia.
- The visa itself has a validity period of 90 days, meaning you must enter Indonesia within 90 days of issue.
- Applying via the online portal is the easiest option, although the website can be glitchy. If you plan on staying longer in Indonesia, you can apply for another visa in the same portal.
2. Obtain a "Visa on Arrival" upon arrival at the Jakarta (or Bali) airport.
You can queue for a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at the airport. The cost is currently IDR 500,000 (about AUD 50), payable in cash. ATMs are available in the arrivals hall if you don’t have cash on hand. Keep your boarding pass—officers sometimes ask to see it.
3. If your country is not on the list, you will need to apply for a visa at an Indonesian consulate or embassy in your home country.
Notes about applying for a "e-visa" :
The "evisa" website (and the main Indonesian immigration website) does not work if you use a VPN.
You will need to upload a scan of your passport and of your e-ticket in PDF format.
Once you click "submit" you will receive an email with further instructions on how to pay: an "OTP" code you need to enter into the portal to access the payment page. There is a payment confirmation window, in Bahasa Indonesia, with an "I agree with the terms and conditions" box you need to tick.
The attached screenshots show the different steps, including the hotel's address you need for your application.
I hope this helps!
